ToggleManual pallet wrapping is a simple job, but when it is repeated throughout the day, the way stretch film is applied can make a real difference.
This is where pre-stretched film comes in.
Unlike regular hand stretch film, which is stretched mainly during application, pre-stretched stretch film has already been stretched during manufacturing. This means the operator needs to apply less additional stretch when wrapping a pallet.
For warehouses and production facilities that rely on manual pallet wrapping, this can bring several practical advantages.
Here are the 5 key benefits to know.

Pre-stretched film is stretch film that has already been stretched during manufacturing before being supplied for hand wrapping.
With regular hand stretch film, the operator needs to pull and stretch the film while moving around the pallet.
With pre-stretched film, much of that stretching has already been completed before the film reaches the operator.
Regular hand film:
Operator stretches → Wraps the pallet
Pre-stretched film:
Factory pre-stretching → Operator wraps the pallet
The main difference is therefore when the stretching takes place.
Pre-stretched hand film should also not be confused with machine pre-stretch, where powered rollers on a pallet wrapping machine stretch the film during automated wrapping.
This is the most obvious advantage of pre-stretched film.
When using conventional hand stretch film, the operator needs to pull the film while walking around the pallet. For occasional wrapping, this may not be a major concern. But for repetitive manual pallet wrapping, the effort can become an important part of the process.
Because pre-stretched film has already been stretched during manufacturing, less additional stretching is required during application.
That can make the film easier to apply and reduce the physical effort required from the operator.
The practical benefit: easier manual wrapping, especially in operations where pallets are wrapped frequently.
Manual wrapping is not only about pulling the film.
The operator also has to pick up the roll, carry it around the pallet and repeat the movement throughout the wrapping process.
Roll weight and handling therefore matter.
Pre-stretched film is commonly supplied in lighter working-roll formats than conventional hand film, making it easier to handle during repetitive wrapping.
This can be particularly useful in warehouses where operators wrap pallets continuously rather than occasionally.
The practical benefit: a more convenient working format for repetitive hand wrapping.
With regular hand stretch film, application can depend heavily on the operator.
Different people may pull the film with different amounts of force or use slightly different wrapping techniques. This can lead to variation in film tension and film consumption from one pallet to another.
Pre-stretched film reduces the amount of stretching that needs to be generated manually.
As a result, the wrapping process can become less dependent on individual pulling technique and more repeatable between operators.
This does not eliminate the need for a consistent wrapping procedure. Pallet dimensions, overlap, number of wraps and load requirements still matter.
The practical benefit: more consistent film application across repetitive manual wrapping operations.
Another point to consider is neck-in.
When regular hand stretch film is stretched during wrapping, the film can become narrower in the transverse direction. This reduction in film width is known as neck-in.
Because pre-stretched film has already been stretched during manufacturing, less additional stretching is required during application. This can help limit the degree of width reduction during manual wrapping.
For buyers, this means that the actual usable width during application is an important factor to consider, rather than looking only at the nominal width printed on the roll.
The final benefit is closely related to packaging cost.
Buying stretch film by the roll does not tell you how much film you actually use for each pallet.
Two films with different roll weights, lengths or prices may produce different results during application.
For this reason, a more useful measurement is:
How much film is used per wrapped pallet?
Pre-stretching can support more efficient film utilization because the film arrives in a pre-stretched condition and requires less additional stretching during application. However, actual consumption still depends on the load, film specification, wrapping pattern, overlap and number of wraps.
So rather than assuming a fixed percentage of material savings, buyers should compare actual film consumption per pallet under the same wrapping conditions.
The practical benefit: better control over applied film and packaging consumption.

Better control of film utilization |
The five benefits are connected.
Pre-stretching changes how the operator uses the film.
That can make manual pallet wrapping easier, more consistent and easier to control.
Not necessarily.
Pre-stretched film is particularly relevant when manual pallet wrapping is frequent and operator effort, handling and consistency are important.
For irregular, sharp, heavy or demanding loads, the film should be evaluated against the actual application before making a full change. Load condition, wrapping pattern and handling route can all affect the result.
The goal is not simply to choose a thinner film or a lower-priced roll.
The goal is to find a film that provides the right balance of easy application, controlled film use and reliable load containment.
Pre-stretched film is more than an alternative to regular hand stretch film.
Its main value comes from changing the manual wrapping process:
Less pulling effort → easier handling → more consistent wrapping → better width control → better film utilization
For warehouses that wrap pallets by hand on a regular basis, these advantages can make pre-stretched film worth evaluating.
YD PACK: Two New Pre-Stretched Film Machines Coming Soon
YD PACK is expanding its stretch film production capability.
Two new pre-stretched film machines will be coming online soon, adding dedicated production capacity for pre-stretched stretch film.
This will give YD PACK more production capability for manual pallet wrapping applications and more options to support different packaging requirements.
Stay tuned for the launch.
